More people call Chicago their home than any other city in the United States, except New York and Los Angeles. Chicago features all the benefits of a big city: great museums, clubs, restaurants, parks, culture, and more.

Amid the looming skyscrapers, Chicago’s downtown area is surrounded by many different neighborhoods, each with their own unique vibe. Hyde Park is located on the shores of Lake Michigan and is known for having once been the home of President Barack Obama. Known for, among many other things, its many independent bookstores, Hyde Park is home to the prestigious University of Chicago. Logan Square is a neighborhood that features three gorgeous Polish cathedrals. Artsy clubs and great restaurants line Milwaukee Avenue.

Many brilliant musicians got their start in Chicago, a fact made even more impressive by the diversity of music that found its source in Chicago. Nat King Cole and Muddy Waters were some the city’s early stars. Later, artists such as Kanye West and The Smashing Pumpkins would get their start here. The city even bred its own form of the blues, a subgenre of the blues known simply as Chicago Blues.

The city’s affinity for music can be seen in the number of large festivals that attract concert-goers from all over the country. Pitchfork features the best artists on the indie scene. Lollapalooza attracts almost 100,000 attendees and is known for featuring a diversity of artists. The Chicago Blues Festival is the largest blues festival in the world.

Chicago is full of adventures just waited to be had! The Chicago Field Museum of Natural History, one of the largest in the world, features enthralling, state-of-the-art exhibits. The city is also quite the baseball town, playing host to two baseball teams—the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs—giving rise to a fun, intra-city rivalry called the Crosstown Classic.

Chicago is a one-of-a-kind city, the unofficial capital of the Midwest. The beauty of this spirited city will certainly continue inspiring musicians for many years to come.

The History of Chicago, Illinois

Few cities in the world are as known, populous, or widely-loved as Chicago. A sprawling metropolis positioned in the center of the Midwest, Chicago rises up on the coast of Lake Michigan around the mouth of the Chicago River. Once nothing but a small trading post easily accessible by water, the city of Chicago has now expanded exponentially since the early days of American pioneers and continues to thrive and attract new residents every single day.

First inhabited solely by Haitian trader Jean Baptiste Point du Sable in the late 1770s, his appearance was followed by the construction of Fort Dearborn by the American government. Even still today, you can find the bronze markers in the pavement at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive, indicating where the historical fort stood before it was demolished. Chicago was eventually recognized as a full-fledged city in 1837, and its official status was swiftly followed by the construction of the Illinois & Michigan Canal a little more than a decade later in 1848 to take advantage of the city’s advantageous trade route position.

Homelessness and expensive reconstruction followed behind the Great Fire in 1871 that destroyed a third of the city, but that didn’t stop Chicago’s incredible growth; people were flocking to the city by the tens of thousands, and by the time the 19th century ended Chicago had introduced the world’s very first skyscraper and held the World’s Columbian Exposition, which drew over 20 million people from all over the world. Chicago continued to be successful and optimistic even throughout the Great Depression of the early 1900s, holding yet another major event, the Century of Progress Exposition, which drew just as much attention.

During the early 20th century, Chicago became a city that welcomed cultural diversity, with a wave of immigrants coming in from other countries as well as a number of African Americans from the south looking for jobs in the northern United States. Nightlife in the city became vibrant and multicultural, with musical artists blending styles to introduce a unique and distinctly Chicago sound to the blues and jazz scene.

Today, Chicago is still experiencing decade-over-decade population growth, and is still an ever-expanding hub of commerce and culture, with a booming and diverse population of residents that continues to welcome immigrants and incorporate their unique and individual voices into the Windy City.
