How to Prepare Your Car

Have a mechanic look over your car
1. Have a mechanic look over your car.

The first and best thing to check off your list is to have your vehicle inspected by a mechanic (hi, we can help with that). Ask for a multi-point inspection, and if your car is close to needing an oil change, get that knocked out, too. Our service techs will give your brakes, battery and fluid levels a thorough check as well.

2. Inspect your tires.

The age and health of your tires is a big deal, especially if you’re planning on increasing their mileage significantly with a road trip. Use the penny method to check your tires’ tread, or ask our service technicians to check them for you during the inspection. Not only will good tires make your ride smoother (literally), but they’ll have the stopping power to avoid incoming

3. Don't overload your vehicle.

You probably know this one, but just in case, don’t forget to load your vehicle properly before taking off. Overloading with excessive luggage or gear not only makes it difficult to see out of the rearview mirror, but the cargo will have a noticeable strain on your vehicle. The handling and gas mileage can be affected by an overpacked car, so be smart about how you pack.

How To Prepare Yourself

1. Charge your devices.

It’s a no-brainer, but it can be easy to forget. A charged device is a great tool on the road for navigation and emergency calling. Batteries will run out quicker if your device is using data or searching for signal / WiFi, so don’t forget a car charger if your trip is a long one.

2. Bring plenty of supplies.

Now, don’t go overboard (see above), but packing emergency supplies is a good tip. Include a case of water, flashlight with batteries, blankets or an extra jacket. If you don’t have a first aid kit, buy one that’s well-stocked, and double check your jumper cables and spare tire.

3. Bring snacks and coffee.

Coffee isn’t the only refreshment that contains caffeine — consider chocolate, tea, energy drinks or soft drinks. If you’d rather avoid caffeine, listen to music, blast the air conditioning or roll down the windows for fresh air. Pack some snacks to munch on to prevent boredom or drowsiness, and always be well-rested before a long drive.

4. Bring a GPS.

If you’re travelling through areas that don’t have the best signal, your device may not be able to provide accurate navigation. A GPS doesn’t need internet access, which is very handy if your device fails. Connect the GPS before taking off so you’re not scrambling to enter in addresses and information while driving.

5. Stay safe.

Travel smart! It’s always better to drive long distances with family or friends, but no matter what, don’t text and drive, and always obey local and state speed limits. And as always, enjoy the ride in your Honda!
